Lake Michigan HOUSE
A SIMPLE LIVABLE BOAT HOUSE ON THE EDGE OF SACRED WATERS.
Water. Lakes, rivers, oceans, and even puddles have always pulled at the human psyche. Not only because we are made of mostly water and because we need water to survive, but for us and our client, water is spiritual and calming and necessary. Even when the water rebels and turns mighty and fierce during the stormy periods, the water provides a psychic stability. A place to reflect and pause.
This house, perched upon and anchored into the shore, is meant to both bring the water and weather into the dwelling, and to provide a launch pad for exploration and engagement with the elements all at once. The house is a stable deck for living. The envelope is intentionally almost completely transparent on the lake side so at all times the client can see the water and remember.
Built on piers with a structural slab and a steel structure, the house can withstand the battering winds and waves. The walls and roof are constructed of SIPS panels and high efficiency windows which provide a high R-Valve and a tight envelope. The concrete floor and massive concrete fireplace provide enough mass to act as a heat sink in the fall and winter months. The operable openings are strategically situated so passive cooling is encouraged during the hot, humid Michigan summers. Power is optional. There is a well, cistern and a composting toilet.
There are three plan options that were considered for this house; small, medium and large.
