CAFAC PARKING YARD SHED

A STEEL SHED FOR ARTISTS AND A COMMUNITY .

What happens when you take a heap of dedicated and talented women, a mission to support exploration of the “fire arts”, and a community that believes in honoring authenticity, beauty and truth? You get the Chicago Avenue Fire Arts Center (CAFAC), located in the Powderhorn Park neighborhood of Minneapolis, a vibrant artist space dedicated to helping people engage in all things fire arts: welding, forging, forming, bending, jewelry making, etc.

Because of the success of CAFAC over the last decade and the growth of art and community programs, CAFAC desperately needed a storage shed to house metal stock and metal fabrication and production paraphernalia. And so, we designed this shed to act as an ancillary building to help alleviate the space current utilization for storage inside their dedicated art space in order to free up space for art making.

Not your typical shed, this building will be almost 500 square feet, 14 feet tall and sports a 10 foot cantilevered steel awning. And of course, we made the whole thing out of steel. The rainscreen Cor-ten steel cladding was salvaged from another project and will be fabricated and artfully installed in situ.

The project has been given the green light by the City of Minneapolis, and construction is scheduled to start in the Summer of 2022.
